Mixed Media with Markers: Combining Techniques for Unique Effects

Mixed Media with Markers: Combining Techniques for Unique Effects

Combining markers with other media creates unique effects. Start with quality alcohol markers as your base medium.

Compatible Media

Colored pencils: Add details, texture over markers. Fine liners: Define edges (must be waterproof). White gel pen: Highlights, sparkles. Posca pens: Opaque coverage.

Markers + Pencils

Markers first for base, pencils second for details and texture. Burnish with light pencil to smooth.

Markers + Ink

Ink first (traditional) or markers first, ink last (modern). Vary line weight for depth.

White Highlights

Use white gel pen or Posca for final highlights. Add last after markers dry. Sparingly for impact.

Paper

Mixed media paper (150+ GSM) or smooth Bristol board works best.

Tips

Test combinations first. Markers before other media. Limit to 2-3 media types.
